I started Shohaus in 2020 to bring culture back to furniture. Big-box and brand-name furniture sells mass-produced designs at big markups, and the culture has gone out of it. I want to change how we think about furniture and design. A piece should be sized and finished to your space, with the same or better quality than the big names, for less. I came to furniture from brand and design work at Refuse Normal Studio, whose clients included Reebok, W Hotels and Marriott, and I wanted to design physical objects people live with. Designers also lacked a partner who would collaborate on their ideas, so we set out to be one. Today I lead design and the Trade Program at our El Segundo studio and work directly with designers and architects. I stay hands-on with clients on custom pieces, from sketch to delivery, and I'm obsessive about woods, finishes and fabrics. I write about them in the Shohaus Journal.
